The Director of the Centre for Health Policy (CHP), Dr Jane Goudge, was promoted to Associate Professor in May. Jane has been the Director for six years, and was a member of CHP’s management for eight years prior to that. The Centre is one of the oldest research entities of the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences.
The criteria for promotion to associate professorship requires a candidate to demonstrate distinction in his/her field of research, and be distinguished or more than competent in the other two areas of teaching and/or academic citizenship.
Associate Professor Jane Goudge obtained her PhD from London University in 1998. She joined CHP in 1998 as a health policy and systems researcher. Jane has taught on the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme for the past 14 years and coordinates the Health Care Financing Module. Jane has also been responsible for curriculum design (such as the new introductory module within the health policy and systems field of study), and adapting existing health financing modules to ensure the material keeps pace in a constantly changing field.
Since 2009, under her leadership CHP has raised about R80-million of competitive research grants and collectively has published 122 articles over the past five years. Jane has dedicated much time and effort to building the capacity of young researchers, particularly in the field of health systems and policy research. She has supervised three masters and three PhD students to graduation, and is currently supervising a further seven PhD students and one post-doctoral fellow. CHP has graduated 17 post-graduate students and 12 PhDs over this period.
