Felix Limbani, a researcher and PhD fellow with the Centre for Health Policy received an award for the Best Student Oral Presentation during the 2016 Faculty Research Day and Postgraduate Expo held on 1st September 2016. The award was given within the Education, Policy and Systems stream. The winning presentation was based on a pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial of clinic based Lay Health Workers carried out in Agincourt HDSS in rural Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga between 2013 and 2015 with support from MRC UK. The intervention had Lay Health Workers assisting primacy care nurses in chronic disease management, aimed at improving control of diagnosed high blood pressure and increasing identification of high blood. The presentation focused on preliminary findings of the trial’s detailed realist evaluation – highlighting how context and mechanisms affected the implementation process and trial outcomes.
